Minutes of Meeting held on Wednesday 22nd January 2003 at Welwyn Pavilion

 

Present:   A Trotter (Chair), B Connelly, S Catlin, S Guy, P Richmond, D Spruce,

C Thompson, M Thomson.

 

Apologies:  R Aubrey, R Brett, B Primrose.

 

The Chairman welcomed Dennis Spruce on to the Committee.  Dennis said he felt sure his wife Joan would also be willing to help at a later date.

 

1.   Scarecrow:   Fliers advertising this competition to be put up around the village.

2.   Funds:   Mungo has opened a Business Premium Account to accrue interest.  The accounts are now being audited and should be available before the next meeting.  We have an excess of income of £1631-00 for 2002.  It was discussed as to whether insurance would be a good idea in the case of inclement weather but this could prove to be very expensive. Phylis to obtain details of conditions and premiums.

3.   Dog Show:   It was confirmed this was a good idea but a little too early to organise as yet as was the arrangements for the Open Gardens.  There was also nothing to report on the Street Market at this time.

4.   Fancy Dress Parade:   It was agreed the theme this year will be Characters from Harry Potter.

 

5.   Fun Day Update:   Shirley Guy reported she had booked a Surf Simulator for £295 + VAT.  To query whether generator will be supplied.  Ruth has booked OWLS for the day but will confirm this before next meeting.

  Bungee running also booked £285 + VAT.  It was thought tokens might be a good idea on the day to save stallholders having to handle the money.  Nigel the Klown also booked.  It was thought a Jazz band would be very good.   Chris to contact Screwball Circus.  Hopefully Welwyn Social Club will provide the Beer Tent.   Linda will be asked to continue liasing with St. Mary’s Church, hopefully her husband Tony will run the Classic Cars and Linda’s parents the tea tent.

6.   Band:   As it was proving to be extremely hard to find a marching band at an agreeable price it was thought that if we could hire a van or small truck we could lead the parade with a music sound system instead.  Sheila Catlin to contact Royton Motors to see if they will be willing to help with this.

7.   Mardley Heath Event:   The idea of a tour of the Heath and then a talk on the Sunday evening in the Woolmer Green Centre on the History and Natural History of the Heath – possibly linked to the Kate Rook Memorial Evening where Kates’ pictures could be displayed was welcomed by the committee.

8.   Picnic Update:   A group called Pressure has been booked they play country, folk, modern anything within reason.   Cost £250.   The St. Albans Morris Men have been booked price to be confirmed.  Hairy Harry Show booked - £95.  Ferret Racing still being considered as an evening event, perhaps for next year.

9.   Publicity/Signage:   This is to be thought about and a plan produced – laminated signs a good idea as these could be used in future years. A storage area is likely to be available at the QVM if required.

10.  Fundraising:   The Parish Council, Glaxo, Welwyn Times are three that were 

thought of, ideas of any other companies would be welcome.

11.  Youth Events:   10-16 year olds to be encouraged to attend Fun Day.  Pegasus, Evangelical Church, St. Mary’s Church Youth Fellowship all to be contacted.

12.  Daytime Events:   Ideas would be welcome on a few more afternoon events during the week.  Sheila Catlin to ask Alison Witchell if St. Mary’s School would be able to do something also to ask Val Hamby if she would be happy for her Friday afternoon (1.45-3.15) Line dance to be advertised as a welcome event for anyone to go along and try.

13.  Quiz Night:   Andy to ask Steve Vine to organise another Quiz Night.

14.  Youth Talent Contest:   Brian Connelly suggested a contest for young singers who sing anything from pop to opera might be a good idea – The committee agreed and thought it would be a good idea for the winner to sing at the Prom Concert if they so wished – Venue and date to be agreed.

15.  A.O.B.  Brian Wilde – Barraclough in Porridge and Foggy in Last of the Summer Wine to be asked if he would be interested in giving a talk during the Prom interval.

Guest Celebrity needed for judging Fancy Dress Parade.
